I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

I can not believe that Yousendit is stupid enough to throw away all the positive equity you have in the world wide marketplace by changing your name at this point in time. Didn't marketing people learn anything from the branding debacle when a "looking to get rich" PR firm convinced Comcast to change it's name to Xfinity and similar dumb name changes? I can't believe a company I do business with could be this dumb.

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

they don't know how fearful and web averse the average client is.

"hightail" doesn't sound very reputable.

we now have to teach all our clients the new name, or switch to DropBox, which at least sounds normal

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

Not only is the name change a bad idea for all the reasons stated, I primarily use this for business.  Hightail sounds frivolous.  My clients say YouSendIt even when referring to their own inhouse dropboxes.  You're throwing away brand equity.

On a different topic - I'm getting malicious website error messages when I click on the email announcement.  What a smooth transition this promises to be.

There is no need to re-invent the wheel...........YouSendIt!!!!!!!!!

....is someone new in the office trying to prove their worth - make their mark - well it SHOULDN'T be at the clients expense! You know what's going to happen...clients are going to "hightail" it out of here!

Agreed!  I can use a service called "yousendit" with my corporate clients I can't use "Hightail".

Next time... use a focus group.

I will also need to look elsewhere. The good news is that there are other products to choose from. From a service/technology standpoint I have been extremely happy with YouSendit. But to toss out an accepted brand is ridiculous. My clients will not accept files from HighTail.

this is a big Oops.

If the concern is about growing a company locked into product defined name such as "youSendit" why not just keep the name of the product "youSendit" and change the company name to HighTail.

yikes! this is really, really wrong.

and yes I am also getting the malicious error on the redirect...

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

Thanks for the post, always appreciate your input here in the community!  We do so much more than send and have for awhile, so it was time for our name and brand to reflect that.

We are passionate about the new name and believe our new brand reflect the passion that our customers have for their work. We also wanted to it reflect the bold choices they’re making and help them get the job done. Hightail says it best: Get work done.

Hightail gives us a much wider playing field to expand and innovate for our customers and really represents where we are as a company. We have a fully integrated collaboration solution and also have huge aspirations for the future of the product and we felt our name needed to represent that.

Most importantly, we are taking the company to the next level and making long-term investments in our future. We’ve already done so much to transform this company from a product and cultural standpoint and while there is more work to be done this is another moment where we put our stake in the ground.

Be on the lookout for lots of new innovation to come...

Nope.  Still getting malicious site warning.

As for Hightail the name...chose it because Tailhook was taken?  Or simply wanted to cash in on the Lone Ranger movie debacle where all the bad guys want to "hightail it out of here."

Also Hightail to me is only used in the english language when you need to leave before something goes horribly wrong... For example, 'You'd better hightail it out of here before you get a beating!'.

How much time do I have before the name change to research other services?

My clients will assume this is a new company and therefore it might be easier to just move at this point.

Hi Mark

I just watched the video and I am much more relaxed. I realized that YouSendit was a product that allowed me to easily send files to my clients and HighTail is no longer that company. As I listened the message was very clear that the YouSendit that I know and use doesn't seem to have a place in HighTail. HighTail is about passion and other stuff. I just need a safe, secure way to send files.

Take a look at how clean the subbranding works for Citrix/ ShareFile, why not Hightail/ YouSendit

Hightail?  Seriously?  What genius thought up such a completely irrelevant "cute" name that bears no possible relationship to the mission of the business, and conveys no indication of what an email sent from it's servers might imply?

What do you suppose my customers will say when they see an email come in from "xxxxxxxxxxxx@xxxx.com" via HIGHTAIL?  Will they think it's an important file I'm sending, or a link to some sort of thinly-veiled porn site?  For that matter, I'm sure many domains will automatically block emails from your servers.

YouSendIt.com may not have been a snappy name, but it conveyed meaning and implied business content.  Perhaps you should reconsider.

Incidentally, I tried posting this on the "Say Hi To Hightail" blog and it would not work --- kept insisting that a URL be entered even after I entered a valid URL.  It even rejected CNN.com.

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

The first posting here says it all:

"I can not believe that Yousendit is stupid enough to throw away all the positive equity you have in the world wide marketplace by changing your name at this point in time......"

And it would not be so bad if the name didn't sound so utterly and completely juvenile and unprofessional.  I was able to get several of my clients to look into "yousendit.com", and there was not a great deal of resistance to incoming notifications from "yousendit, com" to recipients unfamiliar with the service.  But HIGHTAIL....?

Then look at the drivel-laden announcement email....BOLD MOVE.....CRUCIAL STEP.....EXCITING FUTURE.....HARD-WORKING HIGHTAILERS......      yuk. Nearly made me lose my breakfast.

But the piece de resistance comes  when you click on the imbedded link in the invitation to "Find out more about what HIGHTAIL means...." and land on a page that produces warnings about malicious content.   Yes, this is clearly the work of a technically competent team. The same technical wizards who have been promising to address a minor technical glitch I brought to their arttention over a month ago, and all I have are promises from the first layer to "techies" that the "real wizards" will contact me immediately.

HIGHTAIL ??  Kind of reminds me of what I see every time my wife's cat walks by.

Suffice it to say I am looking into other providers.

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

Does anyone at this company know how to use  dictionary?

from urban dictionary

HIGHTAIL =

To flea[SIC] or to immediately vacate an area in the opposite direction without regard to barrier or obstacle and in all cases continue to vacate until perhaps lost, and most definitely until one is out of all possible sight and vicinity of the area or activity that one is trying to vacate from, releasing excrement while in the process of hightail ('hightailing', or 'hightailing it').

and from dictionary.com

Origin:
1885–90,  Americanism; high + tail,
in reference to the raised tails of fleeing animals, as deer or rabbits

And on this point,

there are actually a few other reasons why animals raise their tails high in the real world:

1. to scare off threats [see fighting cats, a lovely image for many professionals]

2. to defecate [doesn't anyone at your company own a pet with a tail?]

3. to fornicate [enough said]

Change the corporate name if you must, but leave yousendit as name of this service -- or better yet, shorten it to SENDIT or even just SEND.

Why would an established company risk losing professional customers who obviously will not want to use a service that, depending on which of the above connotations first springs to mind,  screams

1. RUN AWAY

2. BACK-OFF

3. **bleep** HERE

and/or

4. FU*K ME

As my wife often says, good luck with that!

we liked yousendit

Brad and team-

Thank you for the update. It is quite unfortunate though, as we have a competitor that uses that phrase in their marketing campaigns and we will need to start looking for another vendor for what you offer. We like the yousendit link and the branding. Drop box is probably where we will move to, after looking into it. We did appreciate your services and previous branding. Hightail is not a phrase that we can send our customers, though.

Thank you.

If there is anything that can be done to maintain the previous branding while still moving forward with the rest of your plans, please let us know.

Thank you!!

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

I didn't realize until seeing the new HIGHTAIL logo animated in the video that the bold horizontal red line above the letter H might be meant to evoke a "high tail" --

Shouldn't a hightail be vertical?

Did no one notice, or worse, no one care about how stupid this looks?

but under the circumstances, the image of a stiff tail knocked flat and laid low is consistent with what you've just done to your business.

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

@ Mark S thanks for providing a link that worked for the Hightail blog, but don't forget you have emails in circulation that have the bad link. I would send out a correction email with a vaild link asap, not a great start to a company name change launch. Honestly my first thougth when I saw the malicious site warning was that YouSendIt had been hacked and they got my email address and were trying to get me to sign in. I did my due dilligence and that is how I arrived at this thread. Not everyone will and a lot of people will see that, close the page, and the trust in the name Hightail is already off to a shaky start.

I have to agree with the sentiment of everyone else, changing the name YouSendIt at this point in the game in this market doesn't sound like a great marketing move. You have a well established product name that is straight to the point, trusted, easy to understand and convey to customers, and proven. When I tell someone you'll receive an email from YouSendIt with a link they never question me, but instead they ask how well the service works.

I watched the video and it's great to see that there is passion for this change internally otherwise it would flop if everyone isn't on board. There was a comment made that the name YouSendIt would lock you into a specific niche service and you didn't want to be defined by that. Great, use a different name, Hightail, for all the other services that you are creating and link to it from YouSendIt.

The company obviously is not so niave as to let the domain YouSendIt go so that someone else snaps it up and creats a copy cat service that would benefit from all of the past work you've done, so keep the service and keep using it as is. Just incorporate it into the products of Hightail, keeping the YouSendIt site separate, but connected. Is that so hard? Other companies have done this with success such as Toyota with their Scion brand or their Lexus brand, we all know they are Toyota. They didn't destroy the well established Toyota name when they created these other brands instead they gave them a life of their own.

YouSendIt is a great service, I just think that you should reconsider making such a hard shift to a new name like Hightail. By the way, the name doesn't inspire any of the feelings that you tried to convey in the video. If you seach the definition of hightail the second one is "To go as fast as possible, especially in fleeing...", that's the feeling I get too as well as the other posters that have contributed to this thread. It conveys the feeling of leaving fast, not providing fast service. If your objective is conveying fast service you would be been better off using "Swift" in the name, as it conveys smooth and sureness instead of fleeing.

Those are my thoughts, good luck.

Rather than spend a bunch of money rebranding, why haven't you worked on the options that users have been asking for?  Like being able to change the default drive from C. . .

By the way, Bit Defender blocks your blog link:  shiny new blog.  Says it is not safe.

Mark,

Don't know how you could throw away a brand that said exactly what you do? All your talk about change is not what I, as a happy user of your service, want to hear. I liked (past tense) YouSendIt because it was easy for my customers to use and it worked almost all the time. Why do you need to do anything other than make it work 100% of the time?

Oh, and I liked your service because it didn't compromise the anonymity of my clients by spamming their email.

Just keep it simple, please, or you can kiss this user goodby.

Best Wishes,

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

Within a nanosecond of seeing the email saying 'YouSendIt has officially changed its name to Hightail' I knew I had to find another service, and I was on the Dropbox.com site (somewhere I've never actually been before) within 15 seconds of reading your full email.

That is the effect this silly name Hightail had on me. Genuinely. And I'm not exaggerating about the 15 seconds. No way am I asking clients to send me files via something called Hightail. It's simply not professional.

And when I read the stuff about 'passion' and 'cultural standpoints' in Mark Stagi's earlier posts here, well, my decision to cancel at the end of the current month's subscription is final.

I just want to send and receive files with the minimum of fuss, and I can assure Mark that I have absolutely no 'passion' about sending or receiving files, nor do I find it exciting or stimulating or interesting in any way whatsoever. I just want it to happen in a businesslike way, and that cannot occur with a company called Hightail. I'm also not particularly interested in any other services that may or may not be in the pipeline. So I won't be around to enjoy them when they arrive. Or pay for them!

'Hightail' possibly means something clever and relevant in America (B-movies, cowboys and 'Red Indians'?), but it has no meaning at all in the rest of the English-speaking world. Just makes you think of a cat with its tail held high showing you its... well, you get the picture! Not a 'businesslike' picture, either...

Just my small contribution/opinion... and genuinely intended to be constructive criticism, though I'm 100% certain it will fall not just on deaf ears, but the ears of someone who is humming quite loudly too! If you paid for research and focus groups you should ask for a refund and damages.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm not a major customer, but all us little guys and our subscriptions add up. You will miss us when we're gone.

I wish you well, YouSendIt, but you're doing a really silly thing, in a really silly way...

It’s also an actionable name – I can hightail it to you; you can hightail it to me.

There's a meeting I'm glad I wasn't in : )

Let's hope that someone just called a new meeting. BTW, I am not adverse to passion in the workplace, it is very important. And I believe that you can be passionate about creating the best file transfer service. But with that comes an understanding of the client needs, renaming YouSendit > HighTail shows a lack of that understanding.

Please rethink passionately

Re: I can't believe Yousendit is changing its name

I do a great deal of business with China and Japan.

With both countries, especially China my initial attemps to get them to accept YouSendIt links were met with resistance.

I can only imagine the difficulties I would have with HIGHTAIL.

At least YouSendIt is purposeful and funtional sounding, and will translate to a degree.

Should have used it as a parent company, larger umbella, and kept YouSendIt as a product name.

Hightail??

Does not make sense, "Hightail" implies NO relation to what your service offers, was it just making a change for the sake of making a change?  "Yousendit" is easy for people to remember and relates to your service, "Hightail" sounds contrived and irrelevant. Why not just a new and improved "Yousendit"?  Your site will also not be as easy to find through a general internet search for "sending" larger files...

Idiots

Hi, the name "Yousendit" made perfect sense, i.e. as in "You send it", simple and very obvious.
The name "Hightail" is ridiculous. It makes me think of "high tail" this is what my female cat does to show off her cat **bleep** and release girl cat smells to entice all the tom cats on our street. Oh how we laughed!!
Whoever came up with that disaster of a name should be sacked.
I'm serious. It makes no difference to me what you call yourselves..........why not say "Hot Ass" or something?
You do a great job and I will continue to use your top notch services, but really............"High Tail" !!!!???
Very funny.
Sincerely,
Val Denham
